Reflecting on Behavior Expectations

Over the last three days, you have watched several student created videos that outline the behavior expectations in our school. I have three questions for you: 1. Why do you think we created the behavior matrix and the videos? 2. What was your favorite video and why? 3. Which area of the school (classroom, cafeteria, bathroom) do you believe we have the most trouble in? List at least THREE steps you will take to help improve the atmosphere of these areas in our building?

16 comments:

  1. 1.To clarify that students know the right and wrong way to use the school policies.
2.Classroom behavior, they are some of the ones you have the hardest to follow.
3.Cafeteria. studentstrong, to revolve around the student body, less warnings and more punishments.

    1. My group thinks that the behavior matrix was created to draw attention to the things we should be doing anyway.
    2. We agree that our favorite video was the classroom rules video.
3a.The school generally has the most problems in the bathrooms.
3b. Not throw food, pick up food/trash that people leave behind, don't leave paper towels in the sink, won't smoke in the bathrooms, won't use our phones in class without permission.

  3. 1. To show us what bad behavior looks like. And so that we will do better. 2. The lunch video because i was in it. 3. The cafeteria, we can clean up after we eat.

  4. Group 1
    1. The school created the videos and behavior matrix to remind students of the appropriate behavior in school even though students are already supposed to know it.
    2. My favorite video was the cafeteria because it was entertaining and funny.
    3. The bathroom is probably the area in the school with the most trouble.
3 Steps to improve school area
    1. Clean up trash even if it's not yours
    2. Don't use cell phones at inappropriate times.
    3. Talk at appropriate levels

    Group 2
    1. I think the videos were created to have the students demonstrate good and bad behavior, that way the students watching can better relate to the situation at hand.

    2. The lunchroom procedure video was our favorite, because it had soothing music along with great demonstration.

    3. We think that the classrooms are the worst among the three rooms listed, since a lot of students treat classrooms as an anarchy. The three steps that we would take to improve the atmosphere would be:

    (1) Promote affirmative thinking throughout the school
    (2) Promote integrity in each student's morals
    (3) Lead by example

    Group 3
    1. To teach us how to be better students at McMichael.
    2. The cafeteria because of the music and creativity.
    3. Bathroom, don't smoke cigarettes, throw trash away, flush toilets.

  6. SAMS' GROUP THREE:
    1. To get it across our heads that we need to respect the school and not treat it like trash.
    2. The classroom, because it was exactly what students do.
    3. Cafeteria, because we treat it like trash. There is stuff everywhere. Under the tables, in the floor, on the tables.

    1. We think y'all created the behavior matrix and the videos because we behave like little kids and disrespect authority.

    2. Our favorite video was the one with Mr. Williams because he made it funny and it showed us how we act in classrooms.

    3. We have the most trouble in classrooms because we're constantly have our phones out, we're not paying attention, students disrespect their teacher's and their peers.

Step 1. The teacher's could make the curriculum more interesting by playing games instead of talking on and on. If they did that we would pay attention and feel more engaged in the class.

Step 2. The teachers could take us for a nice stroll outside while we're having class so we could run some of our energy down. When we're in class we get bored and tired of sitting in the desk for a full 90 min. How could you expect us not to get bored?

Step 3. The teacher's could give us a little more freedom and let us work in groups or pairs.

  9. Mr. Bell's class.
1st group Dylan Martin, Taylor Williams, Austin Cheek.

    1. You created the videos so that you could inform the students about the right thing to do w/o having a class meeting.
    2. I personally though all of the videos were not very helpful most us laughed at them.
    3. Cafeteria is the worst problem that we have here.

2nd group Saira Zavaleta, Austin Carter, Ethan Hill
    1. To encourage people to follow the rules and respect others and themselves.
    2. The classroom video because it is more realistic.
    3. The cafeteria has more trouble because people throw and play with their food leave their trash ont he floors/tables, and they are loud.

3rd group Cody Saeger, Kyle Stevens, Christian Kahn
    1. This group though the videos were very helpful in making the student body self aware and respecting the occupants and staff establishment.
    2. We liked the cafeteria video because it was very informative.
    3. We thought the bathroom was the biggest problem and we could help by not leaving the water running and cleaning up after ourselves.

  10. Sams' Group 4: Kassandra Bravo & Heidi Valentin

    1. We believe that they created the behavior matrix and the videos, because that is the way we act and they want our behavior to improve.

    2. Our favorite video was "Classroom Expectations" because a lot of the stuff on that video showed the way that most people in our classrooms act.

    3. We believe that the cafeteria is what we have the most trouble in. Ways we could help would be: pick up any trash that you see, be respectful to everyone, follow directions the first time given.

  11. Only one of my student groups was able to post independently so I am typing up their comments to share.

    Hannah, Carrie, Weylan, & Jessica
    1. To notify students of the rules.
    2. We liked the cafeteria video best because our classmate Che was in it!
    3. Bathrooms! We will flush, throw away our trash, and won't smoke.

    Adrian & Danielle
    1. Because everyone is breaking the rules.
    2. Danielle--Cafeteria Adrian--I wasn't paying close attention. I liked all of them.
    3. Bathrooms--because they constantly smell like smoke. We can throw away trash, be more careful when using the toilet, and stop cussing as much.

Sallie, Tara, Collin, Hudson, and Caleb
    1. To inform students of the problems in the school and how to fix them.
    2. Cafeteria, because it was the funniest and Chelsea is cool! Also the tam-tam was in the background.
    3. Bathrooms. We will clean up after ourselves and others (if necessary), keep the area smoke-free, and report problems.

Mikayla, Chelsea, Micala, Jesse, and Diana
    1. Because people aren't treating our school with respect.
    2. We all liked all the videos, but we liked the cafeteria video best. We liked this one best because Chelsea was in it and it brought out a lot of good issues.
    3. Bathrooms. Get some smoke detectors! We can be human smoke detectors and report the smokers we can identify. We can exhibit self control and be good role models, not contributing to the problems. We can pick up and throw away our trash.

  12. Brandon, Destiny, Lazarus:
    1. We think that the reason the matrix and the videos were created is to show us how selfish and foolish we can be regarding the ways that we take care of (or not take care of) our school. The message is clear: we need to learn how to keep our school clean.
    2. We liked the cafeteria video the best because it was very entertaining and it was exactly the way that we act in the cafeteria.
    3. Definitely the bathroom!

3 ways that we will improve:
    1. We will tell an administrator when we see our peers not taking care of the bathroom.
    2. We will empty our trays at lunch and stop throwing food at each other because we really don't want assigned seats.
    3. We will pick up our own trash and stop expecting someone else to do it for us. We realize that it is not the janitor's job to clean up our mess!

  13. Ballard Group 2

    1. To make it clear to everyone that we are lucky to have this school and need to treat it and the people in it with the utmost respect

    2. The bathrooms because it was needed the most

    3. The bathrooms because students are smoking in them and that is not only against school policy, it is illegal

    1. Pick up trash everywhere
    2. Not throw food at lunch
    3. Use the bathroom in the appropriate areas

  14. Flynt's class:
We were divided between bathroom, parking lot, and hallways with very valid reasons for all, which included: Bathroom: being wrongfully accused of smoking, the overall cleanliness of the bathrooms (germs); Parking lot: possibility of being hit by a hit and driving idiotically through the parking lots - you aren't paying attention to your surroundings; and Hallways - everyone has to use them, encouragement of the "right" side, diminishing PDAs, and running!
Ultimately they came to an agreement that the hallways were the most important because everyone has to use them daily. Not everyone is in the parking lot and many students do not use the restrooms (I think that this could be changed if the bathrooms had a face lift).
As for the quote, they simplified it to "no boundaries = no respect" and if the boundaries were established and enforced, then maintenance of respect would exist. Example the bathrooms - if the bathrooms looked better, then students would be more apt to keeping them looking the same vs. doom and gloom!?!?
