Respecting Our Bathrooms?

In the article you read yesterday (Flushed with Respect for Bathrooms), the author discusses several important points about public school bathrooms. Please answer the following questions as a class:

1. Do our students respect our restrooms? Please give two examples of how we do or do not respect our restrooms.

2. What are the TWO most important steps our entire student body should take in order to show more respect for our restrooms?

    1. As a class, we do not feel that our students respect our restrooms. Students disrespect the restrooms by smoking and writing on the walls.

    2. We can show ore respect for our restrooms and our custodians by picking up our trash and flushing the toilet after using it.

Student do not respect our restrooms. They smoke, throw trash on floor and sometimes do not flush the toilets.

Students can show respect for our restrooms by putting trash in appropriate containers, flushing toilets after using them and not smoking in the restrooms.

Students do not respect our restrooms. Students often draw on the walls and throw trash in the floor.
As a student body we can respect our restrooms more by not smoking, throwing our trash away, and flushing the toilets after we use them.

Students do not respect the restrooms. They smoke, break the doors, clog the toilets, urinate on the floor, etc.

Students can show respect for the restrooms by cleaning up after themselves and not intentionally making a mess. We can also not vandalize the restrooms or smoke in there.

  5. Coach Sams' 2nd Period Class ROCKS!!

    1. Students feel we do not respect our restrooms because of the number of students that just hang out, the trash in the floor, and the writing on the walls.

    2. As a school we need to clean up after ourselves and THANK THE CUSTODIANS FOR DOING SUCH AN AWESOME JOB!

  6. Ms. Stearns' 2nd Period

    1. No - students do not respect the restrooms because there is often trash & body fluid on the floor, and (supposedly) the wall. Students also use the restrooms for smoke breaks & to skip class to play on their phones.

    2. It is suggested that each class has a certain "restroom break" time, so that we know who is going when... it would be easier to monitor.
If we put smoke detectors in the bathrooms, that would be an easy way to get rid of the smoking problem - one step at a time!

    1. We do not think that we respect the bathrooms. It is a shame that students smoke, leave trash, and urinate in places other than the toilet.

    2. We can pick up after ourselves and follow the expectations that are now in place.

    1. Smoking is one way students do not respect the bathrooms.
    2. Feces and urine on the floor is another way students do not respect the bathrooms.
    3. Students could respect the bathroom by using the toilet.

    1. We feel that we do not respect the bathrooms. Two examples of students not respecting the bathrooms are smoking and not flushing.

    2. We can show more respect for our restrooms by holding each other accountable for not smoking and by cleaning up after ourselves.

  11. Hopkins English IV: We do not feel that students respect the restrooms here at McMichael. People throw things on the walls, do not flush, and smell up the area with cigarette smoke. Some even stop up the toilet with entire rolls of toilet paper. We can start by doing our part and pick up after ourselves. Some suggest smoke detectors in the restrooms. Fixing up the restrooms may also motivate some to keep them in better shape. Self-flushing/automatic toilets could help too.

    1. We feel the boys bathrooms are still shown lack of respect by some of the toilets having too much tissue added and not having them function properly and writing on the walls. Girls bathrooms could be better with less smoke and less use as a beauty salon with hair curlers and electric cords running all across the floor.

    2. Students can cuf off water in sinks that are constantly running and not working properly instead of waiting for the custodian to do it. Students can report any type of faulty sinks or toilets to the office.

    1. Smoking is a disrespect to our bathrooms
2.Writing on the walls is disrespectful
We can all show our respect by cleaning up behind ourselves and flushing the toilet . Smoking should never be an option.

    1. We do not respect our bathrooms by writing on the walls and leaving trash on the floor.

    2. We can learn to respect our bathrooms by picking up trash and throwing it away and flushing the toilet after use.

  15. Mrs.Miles (2nd period): No, we do not respect our bathrooms. While there are many examples that our class came up with, here are a few:
    1. After we dry our hands, we throw the paper towels on the floor.
    2. Smokers go into the bathrooms and poison our lungs.
    3. Instead of flushing the toilet after we use the restroom, we leave the grossness for others to observe.
    4. We write profane messages on the walls in hopes that we are recognized for our foolishness.
    5. We break the toilet seats because we are silly and inconsiderate of the school's property.
    6. We think it's funny to put paper towels in the toilet so that we could watch the grossness spill out on the floor.
    7. We don't wash our hands and then we touch the door and make others sick from our germs.

These are just some of the ways that we don't respect our bathrooms. We are gross and we are willing to change.

    1. Mrs. Miles (2nd period)--added: We will change by telling others to clean up after themselves instead of watching them ruin our restrooms. We all have to use them and we would prefer not to be hospitalized due to some of us. So, as a school we need to start making others accountable for their grossness in the bathroom.

  16. Rogers Math II 2nd Period: We think that students do not respect the restrooms. One major problem is smoking the bathroom. Another major issue is general cleanliness of the restroom (not throwing away trash or flushing). One major step would be for people to take responsibility for themselves, their trash, and flush their toilet. The second major step would be for students to have the self-respect and concern to be clean and wash their hands and throw away the paper towels.

    1. The students are in agreement that there is no respect for the restrooms. They cited examples such as toilets not being flushed and paper towels being thrown on the floor.
    2. Two of the most important steps that could be taken might be to clean-up or remodel the restrooms. Students might have more respect if things were clean and new. Additionally, they expressed concern than in some bathrooms it is very dark and scarey. If restrooms were updated a little bit it might make a huge difference in the level of respect and ownership students feel.

  18. Shields' class:

    1. Not flushing the toilets, paper towels in the sink and on the floor, dip/cigarette butts in the urinals

    2. PRIDE. If students had to clean the bathrooms as a discipline consequence, they might think twice before dirtying things up.
A fresh coat of white paint on the walls might help with instilling pride in the school as well.

  19. Cannon:

Students smoking in the restroom and not flushing the toilet are two big reasons why there is no respect for the restrooms.

Students can do their part and clean up after themselves. Students can also let someone know if something is wrong in the restroom such as the toilet running or the soap dispensers being empty.

  20. Schneider's Class

Problems include students smoking in the restrooms, not flushing, not cleaning up after themselves, and apparently there is an issue with feminine hygiene products being left behind in the ladies restrooms.

Students need to be aware that while the custodians are supposed to clean the restrooms, they should not have to clean up excessive messes. Every student needs to take responsibility for their own mess. As far as the smoking issue, we don't have any other suggestions besides "don't smoke".

    1. Do our students respect our restrooms? Please give two examples of how we do or do not respect our restrooms.

    Things that DO show respect:
Throw away trash. Wash hands. Don’t leave water running. FLUSH. Don’t write on walls. Do not smoke.

Things that DO NOT show respect:
Expect that janitor will clean up after you. Vandalism (broken doors). Smoking.

    2. What are the TWO most important steps our entire student body should take in order to show more respect for our restrooms?

When you see someone doing the wrong thing, tell them about it.
    Be the example yourself.

    1. Treat everything as if it were your "own" and you want to take care of it!
    2. If someone is not taking care of school property, call them out and ask them
    to fix what they did.
